Geek Of the Week (originally posted April 24. 2007)
This is one of the coolest ideas I've heard that covers the TEKS about the History of Science. Zach White Elementary does this assignment at the beginning of the school year, where the kids design famous scientist trading cards. They are given a sheet of 8.5x5 card stock and then they are given this website to webquest a famous scientist:http://wertzgeek.tripod.com/. During the presentation of the cards, the kids get extra credit if they bring their scientist prop (like peanut butter or a kite or magnets) or if they dress up like their scientist. Way cool!
Now that the STAAR test is dual coding the questions, I think this project would be really cool to do throughout the school year, maybe have a famous scientist for each unit of study and have the kids collect them throughout the year. Lots of possibilities here!
