What is the EL PASO SCIENCE NETWORK?
The El Paso Science Network is a regional network of partnerships that provide sustained and high intensity professional development to K-12 teachers of science across Region 19. Our partners include the Education Service Center-Region 19, the University of Texas at El Paso College of Education and College of Science, twelve school districts, and participating private and charter schools. This network has come together to design and implement exemplary science professional development using research-based instructional models, materials, and best practices.
Our Mission
To provide Texas science teachers with support systems of scientifically researched, sustained, and high intensity professional development and mentoring to assist them in the implementation of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Our programs equip teachers with the knowledge and skills to engage students in meaningful science learning experiences that will improve students' scientific literacy and inspire them to pursue science and engineering related careers.
EL Paso Science Network Cohorts
Every year the El Paso Science Network recruits a cohort of Science teachers that agree to commit to 100 hours of professional development. They also agree to mentor their fellow teachers at their campuses or within their districts. The network agrees to pay for the professional development as well as provide resources, supplies and equipment that can be used in the classroom. Science teachers recruited are primarily elementary and middle school Science teachers and the focus of the professional development is to improve overall Science achievement at 5th, 8th and EOC levels. Each year has a topic focus. This year's focus is Biology EOC.
Texas Regional Collaboratives (TRC)
The El Paso Science Network is actually an affiliate collaborative of the Texas Regional Collaborative. The TRC is a non profit organization that provides professional development to K-12 Texas Science and Mathematics teachers through Regional Collaboratives across Texas. The TRC is headquartered at the Center for STEM Education, College of Education, The University of Texas at Austin. In the 2013-2014 school year there will be 58 Regional Collaboratives in total that support teachers all over the state, 34 Science Collaboratives and 24 Math Collaboratives. Region 19 houses both Science and Math Collaboratives. Click on this link for the Structure of the TRC!
